Battery storage for commercial solar

Use more of the energy you generate — and protect your business from grid disruption.

A solar installation generates electricity during daylight hours. Without battery storage, any electricity you generate but don’t use in real time is either exported to the grid at a low rate or simply lost. A battery changes that. It captures surplus generation and stores it for use when the sun isn’t shining — in the evening, at night or during periods of high demand.

Battery storage can also be installed without solar, charged from the grid during low-tariff periods and discharged during peak-rate periods. Either way, the result is greater control over your energy costs and a meaningful reduction in your electricity bills.

Two ways batteries add value

Alongside solar

When paired with a solar installation, a battery captures the energy generated during the day that isn’t immediately used on site. That energy is then available when your demand increases — typically in the evening — meaning you buy less from the grid overall. This can significantly improve the payback period and overall return on a solar investment.

As a standalone unit

A standalone battery system is charged from the grid at times when electricity tariffs are at their lowest — typically overnight. That stored energy is then used during the day, when tariffs are higher. For businesses on time-of-use tariffs, this can deliver meaningful savings without any solar generation at all.

Additional benefits

  • Grid resilience: a battery provides backup power in the event of a grid failure, keeping critical systems operational
  • Demand management: reduce peak demand charges by discharging the battery at high-demand times
  • Future proofing: as electricity pricing becomes more dynamic, stored energy becomes a more valuable commercial asset

What we do

We assess your energy consumption profile, your existing or planned solar installation and your grid connection to recommend the right battery system for your site. We manage procurement, installation and commissioning, and can include battery management within our ongoing solar management service if required.

Dramatically lower your electricity bills

Batteries can be installed as standalone units, and charged from the grid at times when tariffs are at their lowest; or installed as part of a solar installation to use any excess energy that is being generated but not used during daylight hours, helping to lower your bills.

Enhance your energy resilience

Batteries can protect your business from energy failures by seamlessly activating in the event of a disruption in your energy supply. Batteries activate within milliseconds, enabling you to sustain critical processes and equipment, ensuring business continuity during energy outages.

Enhance the value of solar pv

Installing batteries alongside solar PV delivers enhanced cost-savings by utilizing more renewable energy and reducing reliance on expensive fossil fuels. Consequently, batteries improve the Return on investment (ROI) and net present value (NPV) of solar.

Fully funded batteries with zero upfront investment

Whilst businesses can make good financial returns via the implementation of batteries, the initial investment can be a concern for some. So, for businesses that don’t have the capital, or prefer to invest their capital in other areas of their organisation, Footprint Zero can help by providing fully funded battery installations with zero upfront investment, with the savings more than covering the costs of the financing.
